Is your goal to create an organization which embraces the full spectrum and power of diversity? Seeking out and valuing diversity in all its forms will ensure that all talents are fully utilized and aligned with the organization’s talent, culture, brand and business development goals. In order to ensure your employee mobility program is seeking out and valuing diversity in all its forms, there are four steps we recommend getting started.

Checking your policy language should be one of the first things that you do.  To be more inclusive there are simple and highly effective changes such as, removing “spouse” and using the word “partner”. You can also consider adjusting “home leave” language to “travel allowance” as some employees may prefer having someone come visit them in their new location, or do not have a “family” to visit.

Thinking like your employees will also help you compile an effective and utilized program. Offering benefits that are flexible enough to cater to various career paths, family types, nationalities or even religious beliefs can provide a sense of comfort amongst your employees. A survey to employees is a good pulse check on your current offering.

Your policy is only as good as the employees who use them. This is a good opportunity to incorporate constructive feedback on what improvements your policy can use, and what you can get rid of.

Lastly, the obvious and simple fix is to open up the job to all types of candidates. This means that organization changes, outside of mobility might need to be implemented to achieve this. Work closely with your Talent Management and Talent Acquisition teams, on an agenda item that is surely already being talked about. Working together can help secure the top talent for your company while adhering to DE&I business objectives.

Global mobility extends much further into the personal lives of employees, sometimes in profound ways. A global mobility opportunity affects the employee’s life as well as that of their family. This involves considerations about housing needs, partner career opportunities, children’s education, living away from friends, family, and community, the political/social environment of the new location, and other factors.
