A Quarter Century of Insights & Growth
Interviewer: How long have you been in the relocation industry?
Dean:I’ve been in the relocation industry for over 25 years. I started my journey on the operations side of the business as a relocation consultant at Homepool (CRS), which later became SIRVA. After several years in operations, I transitioned to client development. Over my tenure, I have had the privilege to partner with a variety of clients within a broad spectrum of industries varying in size and complexity. Some of the more extensive global engagements I have led include companies like Cardinal Health, Chevron, DuPont, John Deere, and Ford Motor Company, to name a few.
Interviewer: Can you share how you got started in the relo industry?
Dean: I was recruited by the owner of Homepool, Ed Davidson. Interestingly, Ed was a trustee of my college Alma Mater, Ohio University. The plan was to learn every aspect of the business, contribute to its growth, and eventually take it public. Initially, as a small boutique relocation firm, we garnered a loyal clientele who appreciated our emphasis on customer service. As we expanded, we added a suite of services including expense management, mortgage, appraisals, and closing services. One memorable project I worked on was developing the first corporate Fixed Fee home sale program. Throughout my career, I have managed a team of client and business development representatives and policy consulting. Every stop has been an adventure filled with many successes and failures. It’s true what they say: You learn most from your failures.
Interviewer: What’s your favorite part about working in the relocation industry?
Dean: It’s difficult to pinpoint just one aspect, but if I had to choose, it would be the people I’ve had the privilege to meet. From the transferees and families, I’ve assisted in moving, to the diverse array of colleagues and clients I’ve collaborated with, it’s truly been an honor and privilege to be a part of their experience.
Interviewer: What’s one thing you wish more people knew about the relocation process?
Dean: I believe it’s essential for people to recognize the pivotal role of the relocation consultant. While technology undoubtedly plays a crucial role, the consultants are on the front lines and are the people responsible for creating the best experience possible. The best consultants I have worked with are true professionals and take pride in the level of service they provide to each of the employees and families they work with.
Interviewer: If you could switch jobs with anyone else in the company for a day, who would it be and why?
Dean: If given the opportunity, I think I’d opt to manage our supply chain for a day. It would be fascinating to explore the intricacies of working with our various partner suppliers and to experience firsthand the dynamics of procurement and supply management within our organization. Not to mention the perk of getting to travel internationally to meet our partners. That would be pretty cool.
Interviewer: If you could enlist the help of two celebrities, historical figures, or musicians to assist you with packing and moving, who would they be?
Dean: Well, if I was going for a bit of humor, I’d definitely know who I would not pick Joe Biden and Donald Trump! They may never get any work done since they might argue the whole time. It would definitely make for quite an interesting moving day. I’d probably have to call my consultant to have them replaced! On a more serious note, if I had the chance to choose, I’d opt for spending a day with two iconic figures from history: Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Their wisdom and insight would undoubtedly make the moving process both enlightening and entertaining. But if we were doing someone on the musical front, it would be a fantastic experience to have Bono and Bob Marley lend a hand. Their music has such a universal appeal, and I imagine their positive energy would make the packing and moving process feel like a breeze.
Lifeguard Heroes and Tee Time Dreams: Unveiling Passions Beyond the Office
Interviewer: What’s a talent or skill you possess that might surprise your coworkers?
Dean: Surprisingly, I served as an ocean lifeguard on the Jersey Shore during my younger years. There was one particular incident where I rescued two children from drowning, although admittedly, I was quite fearful for all our lives considering I wasn’t the strongest swimmer on the patrol. Both children I rescued eventually became lifeguards themselves, with one now overseeing Avalon’s Beach Patrol.
Interviewer: What’s your favorite hobby outside of work?
Dean: Besides spending quality time with my family, I’m passionate about coaching and playing hockey as well as indulging in a round of golf whenever I can.
Interviewer: What’s one thing on your bucket list that you haven’t accomplished yet?
Dean: A longstanding item on my bucket list is to take my family on a journey to visit the towns in Italy where my grandparents hail from. My grandmother’s hometown, Campagnano di Roma, lies just outside of Rome, while my grandfather’s village, Tocco Da Casauria, is located two hours west of the capital.
Dean’s comprehensive interests, from lifeguarding heroics to coaching hockey and golfing escapes, give you a picture of a leader with a dedication to family. This coupled with his adventurous spirit, underscores a commitment to balance and fulfillment outside of work. In the dynamic landscape of relocation, where adaptability and exploration reign supreme, Dean’s diverse passions serve as a testament to his ability to navigate the unknown with poise and purpose. Dean exemplifies leadership—one grounded in compassion, curiosity, and a great balance of personal and professional fulfillment.
